Is it Safe Vaping on Expired E-Liquid?

Is it Safe Vaping on Expired E-Liquid?

If you've been vaping for a while, chances are you have quite the collection of e-liquid bottles.  Or maybe you're just getting started and are amassing a collection as we speak.  Or maybe you're more into the disposables game and have a stack of unopened (or opened) disposables just waiting to be enjoyed whenever you get the chance.

Now let's think of another scenario - you probably forgot you had a bunch of e-liquid bottles and just stumbled upon a stash of it dating back however long.  And while it's probably in your mind to get around to vaping the newfound stash, expired e-liquids may pose a problem.  So that's what we'll focus on today - is it safe to vape on expired e-liquids?  And how would you know if e-liquid is expired?

IS IT SAFE TO VAPE ON EXPIRED E-LIQUIDS?

BLUERAZZ ICE & HAWAIIAN ICE

7ML | 5.0% Tobacco-Free Nicotine

All e-liquids, whether they're bottles for open systems or all-in-one closed systems such as Ello Disposables possess a Batch ID which includes an "expiration" date or a "born on" date.

Should you find yourself unsure or the label or box does not mention anything about a born on or expiration date, it's important to consider that if your e-liquid is expired, there is nothing to worry about.  Information like this does not exist to provide safety, meaning, if you do choose to vape on expired e-liquid, nothing detrimental to your health would happen.  This is more about quality.  When you see an expiration date, it's telling you how long you have to vape on the e-liquid to experience the flavor at its optimal point.

For example, let's say a full year passes by and you found our Bluerazz Ice Ello disposable lying around.  Looking at the expiration date, it expired a few months ago.  You could very well enjoy that disposable device.  The flavor might be muted, but it's still safe and will deliver the nicotine.

WHAT IS E-LIQUID'S SHELF LIFE?

As a rule of thumb, e-liquid typically lasts between 18 to 24 months.  With proper storage, you can expect your e-liquids to stay in the same condition as when it was manufactured and eventually purchased.  Even after the two years, the e-liquid would still be safe to consume; albeit, as we mentioned above, the flavor might be lighter.  Again, this is all a general rule of thumb; and perhaps your situation depending on what e-liquid you have may have different results.

Based on some of the research we've observed:

  • Cherry flavors preserves nicotine while vanilla flavors break the substance down over time.  This means that as your e-liquid expires, your nicotine might have a lessened or amplified effect depending on what the flavor makeup consists of.
  • Chocolate and cherry flavors develop sweeter past the expiration mark.  This might work in your favor if your e-liquid could taste sweeter.  This is a matter of preference.
  • Tobacco flavors possess some of the shortest shelf lives - with most of the dominant flavor notes disappearing within 12 months.

AT WHAT POINT SHOULD I NOT VAPE ON EXPIRED E-LIQUID?

SALT SERIES

30ML | 35 & 50MG Tobacco-Free Nicotine

While there is nothing inherently detrimental to your health should you vape on expired e-liquid, there are a few things you should be aware of.  Upon visual inspection of the e-liquid, you should absolutely toss the bottle or device if:

  • The contents have clumped together.
  • The e-liquid itself smells bad.
  • Black particles have formed at the top.  This is mold and would pose a health threat should you continue to vape it.

It is worth noting that these three instances rarely happen with e-liquid, nevertheless, should be pointed out.

HOW TO STORE E-LIQUID FOR THE LONG-TERM

BLVK FUSION COLLECTION

30ML | 35 & 50MG Tobacco-Free Nicotine

In order to preserve and make the best out of your e-liquid, how you store the products can mean the world in terms of continued use.  In a perfect world, your e-liquid storage should consist of placing the products in a dark, room temperature setting, avoiding any drastic changes in light and temperature.

The flavoring in e-liquid may react to the plastic that holds everything together and may turn funky after a year or so.  Failure to re-cap the bottle may also contribute to lower viscosity, thus making the e-liquid more runny or watered down.
